Sentiment Analysis Symposium 2010

The first Sentiment Analysis Symposium is over, and here are some of our impressions.
First off, we'd like to thank Seth Grimes and the rest of the guys organizing the summit. As Laurel Earheart from SentiMetrix tweeted during the conference; "totally loving the #SAS10 conference; the IQ in this room is in the stratosphere". I could not agree more. The attendees was a collection of very talented people with great visions - and a variety of interesting takes on sentiment analysis.

The mix of both researchers and platform vendors was a refreshing mix, which gave insight into both different tools and new interesting ways of tackling the analytical challenges with new algorithms and information extraction. It is clear that the field of sentiment analysis is still a very new area of research, and both providers and clients are still figuring out their needs and how to attack the challenges we're facing.

Integrasco has always been of the opinion that automated sentiment analysis is not a 100% solution - as with our strategy in other parts of social media analysis, we see the human analyst as a key factor in this area as well. After the presentations and discussions during the conference breaks, it is clear that this is also the general opinion held by many other parties in the field.

Another key outcome of the summit is the need for standards. Everybody is talking about their algorithm accuracies, but there is a big gap in these numbers as well as confusion around what the numbers actually mean. We hope that an important outcome in the aftermath of the conference will be a joint effort to establish such standards and provide vendors with an independent test set for benchmarking sentiment analysis algorithms. From the client point of view such standards are also important in order to make a qualified decision when choosing a social media, and sentiment analysis platform.

Integrasco is happy to be a part of this process.  We have developed our sentiment algorithm in cooperation with University of Agder in Norway and have achieved state of the industry accuracy when testing against predefined libraries at amazon.com.  As far as we know, Integrasco was first to publish 90% sentiment algorithm accuracy in July 2009.
